Robotic Waterjet Investment Casting Shell Removal

Share

There are many methods of removing Investment Casting shell and insulation; these methods include impact, shot blasting, grit blasting and manual waterjetting.

This Robotic Waterjet uses a high pressure pump (20ksi pressure) and rotating nozzle system.

There are two programmable spindles, an indexing spindle system that allows loading during processing.  A Fanuc, industrial robot moves the rotating nozzle over the surface, pausing in positions that require more attention.

The ceramic shell breaks away in large pieces at the start of the process and down to granular, sand-like material at the end of the cycle.  The cabinet needs to reclaim and contain this large range of debris.  The cabinet has an automated washdown to clean the ceramic material.

Castings and casting trees are removed from the waterjet cell with 90% of the ceramic material removed in a few minutes, suitable for further processing.

This system increases output, reduces operator fatigue and provides a quiet plant environment.
